Arkansas Tech’s basketball teams will both look to continue their historic starts to the 2009-10 basketball season tonight (Monday, Dec. 21) when they visit the University of Alabama-Huntsville for a non-conference doubleheader at Spragins Hall.
The nationally 24th-ranked Golden Suns (9-0) will take on the UAH Lady Chargers (2-7) at 5:30 p.m.
The nationally fifth-ranked Wonder Boys (10-0) will face the UAH Chargers (7-3) at 7:30 p.m.
Both games will be broadcast by Russellville radio station KWKK 100.9 FM. Click here to access an Internet stream of the broadcasts.
The Golden Suns have an opportunity tonight to record just the fifth 10-0 start in the 33-year history of their program. Tech’s women started 10-0 or better in 1978-79, 1979-80, 1980-81 and 1985-86.
Junior guard Jenny Vining made a school-record nine 3-pointers and scored a career-high 35 points to lead the Suns to a 75-66 win at North Alabama on Saturday.
Alabama-Huntsville’s women have lost six consecutive games, including a 49-45 home setback against Harding on Saturday.
The Lady Chargers are most dangerous from the perimeter. They rank among the top four teams in the Gulf South Conference in both 3-point field goals made and 3-point field goal percentage this season.
The Wonder Boys have a chance tonight to tie the eighth-longest winning streak in the 95-year history of Arkansas Tech men’s basketball.
Tech’s 10 straight wins to open the season is its best start to a men’s basketball season since 1952-53, when the Wonder Boys won their first 24 games.
The current 10-game winning streak marks just the 11th time that the Tech men have ever won 10 or more consecutive games. The Wonder Boys had not reeled off 10 straight wins since 1995 before this season.
Senior guard Renard Allen had 19 points in an 89-76 Tech win at North Alabama on Saturday.
Alabama-Huntsville already owns wins over GSC West Division members Delta State, Ouachita Baptist, Henderson State, Southern Arkansas and Harding this season.
The Chargers will employ a deliberate, Princeton-style offense to try to derail the up-tempo Wonder Boys and add Arkansas Tech to their list of victims tonight.
