On Top of the Basketball World

More than 600 colleges and universities sponsor intercollegiate basketball at either the NCAA Division I or NCAA Division II level.

Of those more than 600 institutions, only one can say that both its men’s and women’s basketball teams are undefeated — Arkansas Tech University.

Both the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (13-0) and the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (13-0) completed non-conference play with wins on Tuesday.

The Wonder Boys defeated Champion Baptist 99-47 in Russellville, while the Golden Suns beat Southwestern Oklahoma State 84-61 in Weatherford, Okla.

The Golden Suns have matched the second-best start to a season in Tech women’s basketball history. The 1978-79 Golden Suns won 13 consecutive games before suffering their first loss.

Tech’s best-ever start to a women’s basketball season came in 1979-80. Those Golden Suns started 14-0.

The Wonder Boys are off to their best start in 57 years. Tech’s men won their first 24 games during the 1952-53 campaign.

Tech’s current 13-game winning streak is its longest in men’s basketball since the 1993-94 season.

The Wonder Boys’ win over Champion Baptist allowed them to match the seventh-longest winning streak in the 95-year history of Tech men’s basketball.

Arkansas Tech will start Gulf South Conference play by hosting Southern Arkansas University for a GSC doubleheader at 4 and 6 p.m. Saturday.

Russellville radio station KWKK 100.9 FM and www.athletics.atu.edu will have live play-by-play coverage of both games.

Admission to Tucker Coliseum will be free with a valid Tech identification card.
