Brunson Speaks at Art Gallery Reception

Arkansas Tech faculty member Ty Brunson spoke to students and faculty Wednesday afternoon about his work during the artist lecture and reception at the Norman Hall Art Gallery.

His exhibit is entitled “Naked Clay: Sabbatical Exhibition by Ty Brunson,” and the exhibit will be on display throughout the month of January.

Brunson’s exhibit (shown right) features multiple ceramic pieces, which he says are “a new avenue and a new approach to work.”

He adds, “Working with clay is a process, and it usually requires everything to be so precise.  I decided to pursue a different approach by not using formulas.  Instead, I added any component I thought might help bring out the character of the clay.”

Brunson says he used a special salt kiln when creating the pieces.

“Introducing salt when firing pieces creates a light glaze that causes the pieces to have a slight sheen,” says Brunson.  “I used this method instead of applying a traditional glaze to the pieces.”

Brunson says he drew inspiration from “childhood memories of steel bridges and water towers.”

The exhibit will be on display through Thursday, January 28, and the gallery is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m.
