Dr. John W. Watson, vice president for academic affairs at Arkansas Tech University, has received the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) Certificate for Meritorious Service.
Watson was presented with the award during a MAA conference Jan. 13-16 in San Francisco. He was selected for the honor by the MAA Board of Governors based on his service contributions to the organization and his career as an educator.
A native of Plainview, Watson earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971 and his Master of Science degree in 1973, both in mathematics and both from the University of Arkansas.
He added a Doctor of Education degree from Oklahoma State University in 1978. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Spanish from Arkansas Tech in 1997.
Watson joined the Tech faculty in 1978. From 2002-08, he served as dean of what is now the Arkansas Tech College of Applied Sciences.
He was selected in June 2008 to succeed the retiring Dr. Jack Hamm as vice president for academic affairs.
In addition to his administrative role as vice president, Watson also holds the rank of professor of mathematics at Arkansas Tech.
