Four From Tech Named GSC All-Academic

Four student-athletes from Arkansas Tech University represent the Wonder Boys and the Golden Suns on the fall 2009 Gulf South Conference All-Academic teams for football, volleyball and cross country.

Lauren Karnitz and Bailee Miller (cross country), Danny Martin (football) and Laura Farney (volleyball) are Tech’s representatives on the GSC All-Academic teams, which recognize student-athletes for outstanding performance in the classroom, on the field or court of play and in the community.

The teams are selected by a joint vote of GSC sports information directors and faculty athletic representatives. The selections were announced this week by the GSC office in Hoover, Ala.

Karnitz (photographed, top right) is a junior nursing major from DeSoto, Kan. She is on the GSC All-Academic team for a second consecutive year and she qualified for the All-GSC cross country team in 2007 and 2008.

Miller (photographed, second right) is a redshirt freshman from Dover. She was the 2009 GSC cross county freshman of the year and a five-time GSC runner of the week during her first season as a member of the Golden Suns cross country team. Miller earned All-GSC and All-NCAA Division II South Region honors in 2009.

Martin (photographed, third right) is a three-year letterman for the Arkansas Tech football program and a mechanical engineering major. This is the second consecutive year in which he has been named GSC All-Academic.

A native of Tulsa, Okla., Martin was also voted on to the 2009 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VI football team by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Martin had 31 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for a loss and 2.5 quarterback sacks, as a junior in 2009.

Farney (photographed, bottom right), a sophomore from Morton, Ill. and Spanish education major, capped her standout sophomore season with her first GSC All-Academic selection. A 2009 All-GSC West Division performer, Farney ranked sixth in the GSC in kills per game (3.33) and ninth in the GSC in service aces per game (0.35) for the 2009 Golden Suns.

Nominees for the GSC All-Academic teams must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2.
