Arkansas Tech earned a share of the Gulf South Conference West Division women’s basketball title and clinched a No. 1 seed in the GSC Tournament with an 81-59 victory over the Christian Brothers Lady Buccaneers at Tucker Coliseum on Saturday night.
The nationally seventh-ranked Golden Suns (25-2 overall, 12-2 GSC) used a 17-2 run midway through the second half to open up a 67-44 lead with 8:09 remaining.
It was elementary from there as Tech remained unbeaten at home in 2009-10 and earned its first regular season conference title in women’s basketball since winning the GSC West during the 2002-03 season.
The Golden Suns won a coin flip against co-GSC West Division champion Delta State for the No. 1 seed in next week’s GSC Tournament. Tech’s women will face West Florida on Thursday in the first round of the GSC Tournament at Southaven, Miss. Game time will be announced by the league office on Sunday.
Natalia Santos and Jessica Weatherford led Tech on Saturday night with 22 points apiece. Jenny Vining added 12 points and Anna Baran notched a season-high 11 points for the Golden Suns.
Tameka Wooten had 24 points for Christian Brothers (15-11, 6-8), which won a tiebreaker with Henderson State to earn the fourth and final berth from the GSC West Division into the GSC Tournament.
