Tony Dennison scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the sixth-seeded Barry University Buccaneers to a 64-59 win over the third-seeded Florida Southern College Moccasins in the first round of the men’s NCAA Division II Tournament South Regional at Arkansas Tech University on Saturday.
Dennison was 9-of-14 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, and 4-of-6 from the free throw line.
Barry (20-11) shot 50 percent from the field (23-of-46), while Florida Southern was just 23-of-60 (38 percent).
The nationally 13th-ranked Moccasins (25-5) led 56-55 with 2:03 remaining, but a Dennison jumper was followed by a Erick Nsangou layup and Barry moved in front 59-56 with 1:09 to go.
The Buccaneers had a 62-59 lead and the ball with nine seconds left. Florida Southern applied full-court pressure in an attempt to force a turnover, but Barry broke the press for a Zack Trapp layup with five seconds left that set the final margin.
Terry Jenkins scored 18 points and Brandon Jenkins had 15 points to lead Florida Southern.
Nsangou finished with 13 points for Barry.
Barry advances to face Rollins College in the regional semifinals at 6 p.m. Sunday.
