Educators from across the Natural State are at Arkansas Tech today for the annual Arkansas College Teachers of Economics and Business Conference.
This year’s meeting marks the 60th year the ACTEB has been meeting. Organizers say the conference takes place annually at a different university in the state and is designed to foster collaboration among teachers of economics and business.
Dr. Kim Troboy, Tech professor and program chair, says the organization allows educators to come together and discuss ways to improve the economics and business education students in the state receive.
Keynote speaker at today’s meeting is Major General Wofford, Adjutant General of the Arkansas National Guard. He addressed ways to support veterans on a university campus.
His presentation included information about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or operational stress, and building resiliency within the military.
“When I first came into this job more than three years ago I thought PTSD didn’t exist in ‘my’ national guard. I know now that I was wrong,” Wofford said.
Wofford warns educators to look for the warning signs of PTSD, which include reduced productivity, inability to concentrate, decreased ability to handle stress, irritability, disorganization, lack of emotion and overworking. The advice he offers to deal with these students to spend some time talking with them.
Dr. Williams Emmons, Assistant Vice President Division of Banking Supervision and Regulation for the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, will also address those in attendance.
