Arkansas Tech advanced to the semifinal round of the 2011 Great American Conference Volleyball Tournament with a straight sets win over the Arkansas-Monticello Cotton Blossoms at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Friday night.
The top-seeded Golden Suns (33-3) defeated UAM by scores of 25-14, 25-15, 25-22 as they won their 23rd consecutive home match and their 16th straight match overall.
Arkansas Tech will play in the GAC Tournament semifinals at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12. Tech will face East Central University, which defeated Ouachita Baptist in four sets in the late match on Friday night.
Laura Farney led a balanced Golden Suns attack on Friday with nine kills. Sara Motsinger, Kelly O’Malley and Thabata Galvao added seven kills apiece.
Farney also paced Arkansas Tech in digs with 11. Taylor Brown (photographed), Marcela Mascarenhas and Brennae Benda added 10 digs apiece.
Amber Cerrillos made 30 assists, six digs and three service aces for the Golden Suns, who have not lost a home match since Oct. 5, 2010.
UAM’s Amy Kleypas led all players with 12 kills. The Cotton Blossoms, who entered the GAC Tournament as the No. 8 seed, finished their season with an overall record of 7-23.
If Arkansas Tech wins its semifinal match on Saturday afternoon, the Golden Suns will play in the GAC Tournament championship match at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Tucker Coliseum.
