Incoming freshmen will have numerous opportunities to make new friends and get acclimated to Arkansas Tech during the 2012 Welcome Week.
The Tech orientation leaders will assist with several activities throughout the week to help ease the transition from high school to college.
Once entering freshmen move into their assigned residence halls Saturday morning, students and their families can take advantage of a welcome lunch in Chambers Cafeteria. The lunch costs $5.90 plus tax and will be served from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Organizers say Arkansas Tech staff members will be on hand to visit with students and their parents during the luncheon.
At 2:30 p.m. on Saturday a parent send-off is planned. The informal gathering is in the Doc Bryan Rotunda and is designed to offer parents the opportunity to ask any last-minute questions before heading home.
Saturday afternoon, students will begin meeting with their resident assistants in the residence halls to learn more about Arkansas Tech and ways to get connected to campus.
Saturday evening new students will have their first opportunity to connect with members of the Arkansas Tech faculty, as the Student Government Association hosts an indoor picnic dinner at Chambers Cafeteria at 5 p.m.
At 8 p.m. on Saturday, students will gather in Tucker Coliseum for Playfair, the ultimate ice breaker. At the conclusion of Playfair, students will be able to take part in Tech the Night Away in the Doc Bryan Student Services Building.
On Sunday, freshmen can enjoy the Splish Splash Bash on the Caraway and Crabaugh lawn at 1 p.m. The event is sponsored by Student Government Association and Student Activities Board and will offer obstacle courses, water slides and interactive games.
Hypnotist Thomas Bresadola will take the stage at 8 p.m. at Tucker Coliseum. Bresadola’s appearance is sponsored by the Go Bold Welcome Week and the Student Activities Board.
Monday, August 20, the Class of 2016 will gather for a class photo at 10 a.m. and will then hear from Stan Pearson on how to have “it.” Following Pearson, students will have the opportunity to meet their Bridge to Excellence Mentor.
That afternoon freshmen will compete for bragging rights in several wacky games during the Fun in the Sun event, which is sponsored by Student Government Association and Student Activities Board. The event begins a 2 p.m. on the Caraway and Crabaugh lawn.
Students will have an opportunity to learn more about student organizations and area businesses at the Student Involvement Fair. The fair is happening at the Hindsman Bell Tower Monday night from 6-9 p.m.
Tuesday morning students will be able to ensure they are ready for class. Class schedule tours will take place Tuesday at 10 and 10:30 a.m. All tours will leave from the Doc Bryan Rotunda.
At 2 p.m. Tuesday, students will be able to relax and enjoy a matinee movie in the Doc Bryan Lecture Hall.
The Tech community will get a sneak peek at the football team at a scrimmage, following a back to school pep rally to begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Thone Stadium.
Classes for the semester began at 7 a.m. Wednesday, August 22.
Students will be able to snag a Tech t-shirt Wednesday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Baswell Techionery. Students may trade a high school or another university shirt for the Tech shirt, or they may purchase a shirt for $1.
The Greek community will gather at 6 p.m. for a Meet the Greeks event at the Hindsman Bell Tower. Organizers say this will be an informal event to learn more about the Greek community at Arkansas Tech.
At 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Campus Recreation will offer Watermelon Fest at the Campus Recreation Field. The event will include a watermelon seed spitting competition and several recreational games including flag football, disc golf and ultimate Frisbee.
On Thursday, August 23, students can enjoy a movie, compliments of the Student Activities Board. There will be a showing at 6:30 p.m., and a second showing is scheduled for 9:30 p.m.
The annual Tech Rave is scheduled for Friday evening in the Young Building. The event starts at 9 p.m.
Saturday, August 25, students will be able to relax at Lake Dardanelle. Arkansas Tech University will host a Day at the Lake from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Shuttles will be available, and students will be able to enjoy swimming, sand volleyball and more during the event.
