A few spots are still available for area girls interested in taking part in a summer culinary institute. The camp, which is hosted by the Arkansas Tech University Department of Parks, Recreation and Hospitality Administration, will take place June 16-20 at Williamson Hall on the Arkansas Tech Campus. Chartwells is sponsoring the institute, and it is open to girls in grades 9-12. A total of 50 registered participants will meet each day from 8 a.m. – noon to take part in the camp. Susan West, assistant professor of hospitality administration at Arkansas Tech, said the program will teach girls about entrepreneurship, nutrition and job readiness. “This week-long institute was designed to assist young women in their decision making as to a college major,” said West. “In addition to kitchen basics, the young women will learn skills in math and science that are incorporated into the day-to-day running of a kitchen and/or business.” Participants will study under members of the Arkansas Tech hospitality administration faculty and volunteer female chefs from around the state.
