Arkansas Tech University will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2016 with a series of events from Saturday, Jan. 16, through Wednesday, Jan. 20.
The celebration will begin with a day of service on Saturday. Arkansas Tech will host a “The Pack Shack” event with a goal of packing more than 25,000 meals for the food insecure from 9 a.m.-noon in the W.O. Young Building Ballroom. All students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the university are invited to participate.
“The Pack Shack” is a non-profit organization headquartered in Rogers that seeks to “supply provisions and opportunities for our neighbors in need.”
Long sleeve T-shirts will be available for the first 500 volunteers on Saturday. All necessary supplies will be provided to volunteers, and those participating in the event will be recognized at the Arkansas Tech basketball games at 1 and 3 p.m. that afternoon at Tucker Coliseum.
The centerpiece of the MLK Jr. Day 2016 schedule at Arkansas Tech — a Day of Recognition and Remembrance — will take place on Monday, Jan. 18, beginning with a moment of reflection and meditation at 11 a.m. at Hindsman Tower.
A peace march will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Hindsman Tower and continue to the W.O. Young Building Ballroom, which will serve as the location for a ceremony beginning at noon.
Events will continue with an open mic night beginning at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Young Ballroom and a gallery walk from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Young Ballroom.
The gallery walk will feature artistic pieces related to Martin Luther King Jr. and/or the civil rights movement submitted by Arkansas Tech students and registered student organizations.
