Tech to Honor Barrow at Sunday Concert

Dr. Gary Barrow, professor of music at Arkansas Tech University and member of the faculty for 35 years, will be celebrated during and after the Arkansas Tech Symphonic Wind Ensemble’s final performance of the 2015-16 academic year on Sunday, April 24.

The concert will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Witherspoon Auditorium, which is located at 407 West Q Street on the Arkansas Tech campus in Russellville.

Admission will be free and open to the public.

Barrow is retiring at the end of the 2015-16 academic year. He will serve as guest conductor when the Symphonic Wind Ensemble performs “Fanfare Canzonique” by Brian Balmages during Sunday’s concert. Immediately following the program, the audience will be invited to join in a retirement reception honoring Barrow at Central Presbyterian Church in Russellville Downtown.

Dr. Daniel A. Belongia, director of bands and associate professor of music, has titled Sunday’s concert “Tributes.”

Other pieces scheduled for performance include “Vientos y Tangos” by Michael Gandalfi and “Frozen Cathedral” by John Mackey.

Karen Futterer, associate professor of music, will appear as flute soloist in “The Shadow of Sirius” by Joel Puckett.
