Arkansas Tech University student Alyssa Kool is spending nearly three weeks in Thailand as part of a study abroad program.
Kool is a junior from Plano, Texas, and she is studying biology and agriculture business with an emphasis in pre-veterinary.
During her time in Thailand, Kool is learning about providing care for elephants and dogs.
“The first nine days I spent working at the Elephant Nature Park, and I learned about the elephants that have been rescued,” said Kool. “I learned about the mental and social rehabilitation efforts. I also had the opportunity to monitor and help with different procedures.”
After spending time there, Kool transferred to the Animal Rescue Kingdom, which is a dog shelter in the area.
“I have class for two or three hours every morning, and then I have a chance to practice what I learned later in the afternoon,” said Kool. “The ability to get so much hands on experience has really been more than I could have ever expected.”
In addition to learning about the animals, Kool has gained a cultural appreciation for her career field.
“I have a passion for working with animals and wanted to see what veterinary medicine was like in a less developed part of the world,” said Kool. “I have gained so much applicable experience and cultural knowledge as part of this study abroad program.”
Kool said she is looking forward to continuing to grow as part of her internship.
“It would be nearly impossible to get the chance to work with animals in the United States in the same way I’ve been able to here,” said Kool. “I will even have the chance to assist with surgeries later in the week.”
Upon her return to campus later this month, Kool will continue her studies. Outside of the classroom, she is a member of the Arkansas Tech volleyball team and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
