Seeking Constitution Day Student Volunteers

Arkansas Tech University students interested in serving as volunteers for the institution’s 2016 observance of Constitution Day are invited to attend one of two organizational meetings.

The meetings will take place at 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 12, and at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Witherspoon Hall room 274 will be the location on both occasions.

The U.S. Constitution was adopted by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pa., on Sept. 17, 1787.

In 2004, Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia championed a new law that designated Sept. 17 of each year as Constitution Day. Public schools and institutions of higher learning across the United States are required to provide educational programs about the document on Constitution Day.

Constitution Day 2016 events at Arkansas Tech will begin on Friday, Sept. 16, with the following activities:

  • Informational tables at Hindsman Tower and Chambers Cafeteria, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • Informational table at Ross Pendergraft Library and Technology Center, 2-4 p.m.
  • Student-led lessons on the U.S. Constitution in Russellville School District facilities

A public reading of the U.S. Constitution will commence at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, during Party at the Plaza on Centennial Plaza as part of the lead-up to the Arkansas Tech football game against the University of Arkansas-Monticello.

Throughout Friday and Saturday, members of the campus community will have opportunities to take Constitution Day quizzes for prizes, sign a poster reaffirming the principles of the U.S. Constitution and obtain fact sheets about and pocket versions of the U.S. Constitution.

Student volunteers are needed to work the informational tables, give lessons in local schools and participate in the public reading. Volunteers will receive a free T-shirt while supplies last.

All of the above activities are organized and sponsored by the Arkansas Tech Department of History and Political Science.
