As is the case with many comebacks in baseball, it all started with a simple base on balls.
Arkansas Tech University came back from four runs down to defeat St. Mary’s University 10-6 in the first game of the 2017 season for both teams on Friday afternoon at Dickson Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.
The Rattlers led 6-2 after five innings, but everything started to change when Tech’s Jake Harvey drew a lead-off walk in the top of the sixth.
It led to a four-run rally for the Wonder Boys, a rally that included a three-run home run by Zach Klockowski and a sacrifice fly by Marcus Wilson.
The score remained tied 6-6 until the top of the eighth. Tech’s Kyle Love singled and Cody Wescott doubled to start the frame. They both eventually scored on wild pitches to put the Wonder Boys in front 8-6.
Wescott delivered another double in the top of the ninth to drive in two runs and set what proved to be the final score.
Blake Sullivan (1-0) provided Tech with one and one-third innings of scoreless relief. Branden Bohuslav recorded the final six outs, including four strikeouts, to earn the save.
St. Mary’s reliever Zack De La Garza (0-1) was charged with two runs on two hits over two innings.
