Arkansas Tech University’s 2017 baseball season came to an end with a pair of losses at the Great American Conference Tournament in Arkadelphia on Thursday and Saturday.
Head coach Dave Dawson and the Wonder Boys completed their season with an overall record of 34-21. It was Tech’s fourth 30-win baseball season in the last five years.
Game One: UAM 7, Tech 3
The University of Arkansas-Monticello rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Arkansas Tech 7-3 on Thursday in game one of the double-elimination final stage of the GAC Tournament.
Two walks and a hit batsman helped set the stage for the biggest blow in the Boll Weevils’ comeback, a grand slam by Guy Halbert.
UAM reliever Dawson Moser (5-1) retired Tech in order in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win.
Zach Klockowski and Mark Vaughn had two base hits apiece for the Wonder Boys.
Game Two: SAU 11, Tech 3
Mark Fontenot went 2-for-5 with a home run and three runs batted in to lead Southern Arkansas University to an 11-3 win over Arkansas Tech in an elimination game at the GAC Tournament on Saturday.
Vaughn and Kyle Gibbs both hit a home run for the Wonder Boys. Gibbs finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
