Arkansas Tech University formally dedicated the home of Wonder Boys baseball as Carl Baswell Field during a pre-game ceremony on Saturday, March 2.
ATU President Dr. Robin E. Bowen led in the unveiling of a plaque bearing Baswell’s likeness on the grandstand porch along the third base line.
The naming is in honor and memory of Col. Carl Franklin Baswell, Arkansas Tech Class of 1942. One of the most generous benefactors in ATU history, Baswell committed a $250,000 gift for the naming of the baseball field as part of his estate.
Baswell earned the Purple Heart through his service in the U.S. Army during World War II. After retiring from active duty, Baswell went on to a long and successful career as an engineer and consultant.
His financial support of Arkansas Tech has included funds for scholarships and a gift during the Return to Glory campaign. Baswell Residence Hall was dedicated in his honor in 2007 and Baswell Techionery was dedicated in his honor in 2011.
On May 16, 2009, Baswell became the 100th individual inducted into the Arkansas Tech Hall of Distinction under the Distinguished Alumnus category.
Baswell passed away on Nov. 20, 2016, at the age of 94.
Carl Baswell Field is located at the corner of West L Street and North Glenwood Avenue in Russellville.
