Student Stories: Carleigh Powell & Elmer Evangelista
Carleigh Powell
Your name, major and hometown?
Carleigh Powell. Journalism with an Emphasis in Public Relations, from Russellville
What’s your passion?
My passion is storytelling, whether that be through writing, photography or video. I love being able to relate to people in that way.
Why did you choose ATU?
ATU was a no-brainer for me. The scholarships, the size and the opportunities were all so exciting to me as a high school senior. Knowing I could attend school debt-free, get hands-on experience and be more than a number meant the world to me. I cannot imagine myself anywhere else.
What’s been your favorite on-campus memory so far?
My favorite memories on campus were made as a Golden Girl. There’s nothing quite like cheering on the Wonder Boys and Golden Suns right next to your best friends all year long.
Your favorite place to study?
The third floor of the library is where it’s at for me. The first floor is too casual; the second floor is too quiet; but the third floor is just right. Call me Goldilocks, but there’s just something about it. Maybe it’s the effort I go through climbing three flights of stairs since I refuse to take the elevator, because once I get to the top and catch my breath, I’m ready to get things done.
How is ATU prepping you for the future?
My professors have been prepping me for the future from the moment I took a seat in their classes freshman year. It’s amazing to me how much they genuinely care about their students and go above and beyond their duties, not just teaching us, but helping us build our network, find internships and step into a career fully prepared.
Any favorite professors?
There are so many professors that have shown confidence in me that I didn’t always have in myself, and that’s made all the difference. Their faith in my ability has encouraged me to try harder, take initiative and make the most of my college experience.
Your favorite class so far?
So far, my favorite class has been Intro to Multimedia with Billy Reeder. I learned more than I ever could have imagined. It was the most hands-on class I’ve had yet. It taught me how to work with others, manage projects and be a self-starter — skills that are critical in this field.
Your go-to food at the caf?
Ice cream. What can I say? It’s my solace on the bad days and my reward on the good days.
Elmer Evangelista
Your name, major and hometown?
Elmer Evangelista, Rehabilitation Science and Psychology, from Danville, AR
What’s your passion?
My passion is to help people. During my childhood, I was exposed to domestic violence and a family that [was] separated by alcoholism. I realized that people are hurt in some way, and they need someone to help them. I want to be that helping hand to those people.
Why did you choose ATU?
I chose ATU because I already had a family there. I was part of Upward Bound during high school. In the summers, we would stay in the residence halls for five weeks. I have grown to love ATU because it feels like home.
Your favorite place to study?
If you ask any of my friends, they would say I’m always at the library. I always sit in the same seat, and my friends and coworkers think that’s funny. There is always homework to do so that’s why I’m there often. Plus, I kind of enjoy being there.
How is ATU prepping you for the future?
ATU is giving me knowledge through my classes. I have developed good relationships with some of my professors, even ones that I never had a class with.
Any favorite professors?
So far, one of my favorite professors is Dr. Thibodeaux. He is an advisor of the Behavioral Science Club. Dr. Thibodeaux is always energetic and enjoys helping students.
Your favorite class so far?
I have really enjoyed my introduction to sociology class. Dr. Chapman, who is the instructor, is charismatic and makes the subject interesting. The class itself makes you think in different perspectives. The information and topics we discuss are interesting, and I’ll look forward to what else we’ll cover.
Your go-to food at the caf?
I like going to the Mongolian grill or the home-cooked food section. I thoroughly enjoy the dessert section, especially the cookies. The cafeteria’s meatloaf and fried chicken are amazing.
What’s been your favorite on-campus memory so far?
My favorite on-campus memory would be attending the first Wednesday in St. Leo’s campus ministry. Every Wednesday, we would talk about contemporary issues, have home-cooked food, and talk about the readings for Sunday. I enjoy attending every Wednesday with the handful [of] people that are family.
