Clutch plays down the stretch by R.J. Glasper allowed Arkansas Tech University to earn a 75-70 Great American Conference men’s basketball win over the University of Arkansas-Monticello at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Saturday afternoon.
Glasper hit a 3-pointer with 2:05 remaining that broke a 66-66 tie and put the Wonder Boys (5-2 overall, 2-1 GAC) in front to stay.
He added a layup with 1:32 to play that gave Tech a 71-68 edge, and his steal and two free throws with 4 seconds left helped end the Boll Weevils’ seven-game winning streak.
“(UAM) grinds you out,” said Chad Kline, ATU head coach. “We had some toughness. You could tell it was early in the season. There was some poor execution both ways. I thought we took some bad shots. I’m glad we were in Tucker Coliseum today.”
There were 14 ties and seven lead changes in the game. Neither side ever held a lead greater than six points.
Glasper finished with 22 points. Albert Odero added 17 points for the Wonder Boys, while Tony Hall notched 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Justin Slocum had game highs of 31 points and 14 rebounds for UA-Monticello (7-2, 2-1).
The Wonder Boys will host Jarvis Christian College for a 6 p.m. non-conference contest at Tucker Coliseum on Monday, Dec. 9.
