Gov. Asa Hutchinson appointed Arkansas Tech University faculty member Dr. Jason Patton to the Arkansas Geological Survey on Friday, Feb. 28.
Patton’s term will expire on Jan. 14, 2026. He previously served the State of Arkansas on the State Board of Registration for Professional Geologists.
In addition, he currently serves as the president-elect of the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG). Patton has served as a subject matter expert for the national licensing examination administered by ASBOG for the last five years.
A member of the ATU faculty since 2008, Dr. Patton is an associate professor of geology and head of the ATU Department of Physical Sciences. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Arkansas Tech, a Master of Science degree from Murray State University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Arkansas.
Patton is succeeding Dr. Richard Cohoon on the Arkansas Geological Survey.
Cohoon, professor emeritus of geology at ATU, was first appointed to the Arkansas Geological Survey by Gov. Bill Clinton in 1987. He was a member of the Arkansas Tech faculty from 1960-2012. Cohoon is the longest-serving faculty member in ATU history and a member of the ATU Hall of Distinction.
