Arkansas Tech University’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble will offer an immersive music, film and surround sound experience as part of a concert entitled “The Blue Marble” on Sunday, March 5.
The performance will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Witherspoon Auditorium, 407 West Q Street in Russellville. Admission will be free and open to the public.
The theme of the concert borrows from a Julie Giroux composition of the same name. The ATU Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform all three movements of “The Blue Marble” with multi-media accompaniment on Sunday.
“The miracle of Earth is life,” wrote Giroux in describing her inspiration for the composition. “It is the fragile, silken thread that holds existence together. As with the famous ‘Blue Marble’ photograph, I hope this symphony reminds people just how frail and beautiful Earth is. I hope ‘The Blue Marble’ fills hearts and minds with a renewed loved for our planet, our one and only home. Earth is the one thing we all have in common. It does not belong to us. We belong to it. It is our only home and we should always treat it as such which every generation leaving it healthier and happier than the way they found it.”
Other pieces on the program for Sunday include “Passionately Curious” by Giovanni Santos, “Concerto for Oboe” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, “Concerto for Marimba and Wind Ensemble” by Ney Rosauro and “Lincolnshire Posy” by Percy Aldridge Grainger.
“Passionately Curious” will feature ATU Symphonic Wind Ensemble trumpet section members Sanders Hilburn, Jake Hodges, Kris Campbell, Drake Hyche, Kendall Pomeroy, Hayden Judy and Preston Abbott.
Grace Davis will perform an oboe solo on the Mozart piece and Allison Spears’ work on marimba will be spotlighted on the Rosauro composition.
Dr. Daniel A. Belongia, ATU professor of music and director of bands, is the ATU Symphonic Wind Ensemble conductor.
