Arkansas Tech University ranked No. 2 among all NCAA Division II athletics programs in the United States and Canada for community service during the fall 2023 semester.
Wonder Boys and Golden Suns donated 3,876 hours and generated an estimated economic impact of $123,259 with their volunteerism from July 1, 2023, through Dec. 31, 2023. It marks the eighth consecutive year ATU has finished among the top five in the NCAA Team Works Service Challenge, which is open to more than 300 NCAA Division II members.
More than 300 Wonder Boys and Golden Suns volunteered through 21 community entities as part of the fall 2023 program. ATU student-athletes increased their community service hours by 26 percent as compared to the same time period one year earlier.
“Year after year, Arkansas Tech student-athletes and coaches demonstrate their appreciation and affection for our community by giving of their time and energy,” said Abby Davis, ATU director of athletics. “Whether it’s opening car doors at a local school, helping at a local animal shelter or otherwise benefiting our local non-profit organizations, our Wonder Boys and Golden Suns consistently make themselves available and serve as positive role models for area youth. I invite you to continue building that relationship by attending our home events and supporting the student-athletes and coaches who work so hard to represent our university and the Arkansas River Valley.”
In all, NCAA student-athletes gave 203,514 hours of volunteer service during the fall 2023 competition. That translates to a $6.4 million impact on the communities served by NCAA member institutions.
Arkansas Tech finished first in the NCAA Team Works Service Challenge in 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2021-22.
