Arkansas Tech University student Maggie Holcomb has a gift for music, but she hasn’t always been comfortable sharing it with others.
“I usually stray away from things like public speaking or crowds,” said Holcomb.
Her roommates and friends have encouraged her to audition for the Tech’s Got Talent competition throughout her time as an ATU student.
This year, as a senior, she decided to give it a shot.
“Sometimes doing the things that really scare you can pay off,” said Holcomb.
The Bixby, Okla., native won the Tech’s Got Talent 2024 competition at Witherspoon Auditorium on Thursday, Oct. 10.
Holcomb earned the title with a performance of an original song entitled “Central Park.” She sang and played piano.
“I grew up in music lessons until I was about eleven or twelve, so I used to do recitals alongside that, but this is the first time I’ve truly performed in front of a crowd like this since then,” said Holcomb.
A biomedical science major, Holcomb captured the $600 first prize. Second place and $300 went to the band Seismic Waves, while Essynce Norwood earned third place and $150.
Additional finalists included Kenleigh Garner, Rue Recinos, The Band Langston, Hope Skinner and Jamie Walsh.
