Arkansas Tech University hosted more than 1,700 high school Future Farmers of America students for career development events and competitions on Thursday, March 13.

ATU President Dr. Russell Jones helped welcome the FFA members to campus during an opening ceremony at Tucker Coliseum.

“It is always exciting when we get the opportunity to host students with an interest in agriculture, agriculture business and agricultural education on our campus,” said Jones. “Agriculture is in the DNA of our university. You might not know this, but the original name of Arkansas Tech University was the Second District Agricultural School.

“For the past 115 years, Arkansas Tech has grown and evolved to become the regional, comprehensive university we are today,” continued Jones. “But agriculture has always remained an important part of who we are, and I do not believe that will ever change.”

Students from more than 80 schools in the FFA northwest Arkansas district participated in 14 contests. Approximately 100 K-12 agriculture teachers were also in attendance.

“I have first-hand knowledge of the importance of agriculture to our state,” said Jones. “I grew up on small farm near Marianna in eastern Arkansas, and it taught me many of the lessons that have allowed me to pursue my goals throughout my life. I applaud each of you for your involvement in FFA. Like me, the lessons you are learning and the friendships you’re developing with your fellow FFA members will benefit you for the rest of your life.”
