Arkansas Tech University observed Constitution Day 2019 with a series of events on campus and in the community.

Students and faculty from the ATU Department of History and Political Science hosted a public reading of the U.S. Constitution during Family Day activities at ATU on Saturday, Sept. 14.

On Tuesday, Sept. 17, approximately 60 ATU student volunteers visited three facilities in the Russellville School District — Dwight Elementary School, Crawford Elementary School and Russellville Junior High School — and presented U.S. Constitution lessons to more than 800 students.

The U.S. Constitution was adopted by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pa., on Sept. 17, 1787.

In 2004, Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia championed a new law that designated Sept. 17 of each year as Constitution Day. Public schools and institutions of higher learning across the United States are required to provide educational programs about the document on Constitution Day.

Dr. Michael Rogers, professor of political science, and Dr. Jeff Pearson, associate professor of history, are co-chairs for the ATU Constitution Day committee. The ATU Pre-Law Society and the ATU Department of History and Political Science co-sponsor the initiative.
