Arkansas Tech University will celebrate Black History Month 2016 with a month-long series of events.
The events scheduled are designed to provide students with a variety of cultural, educational and social activities.
Black History Month at Arkansas Tech includes:
Monday, Feb. 1 – Kick Off Celebration
- Event begins at noon at Hindsman Bell Tower
- Official start of Black History Month at Arkansas Tech
- Participants invited to wear black and red
Monday, Feb. 1 – State of Black Lives
- Event begins at 6 p.m. in the Doc Bryan Lecture Hall
- Open discussion on current societal issues
- Sponsored by the African American Student Association
Thursday, Feb. 4 – Cultural Appropriations Forum
- Event begins at 7 p.m. in Room 138 of Rothwell Hall
- Open forum discussion on the difference between appreciation and appropriation
- Sponsored by the African American Student Association
Monday, Feb. 8 – Speed Dating
- Event begins at 6 p.m. in Room 242 of Doc Bryan
- Express your personality and meet new friends while finding your match
- Sponsored by the African American Student Association
Wednesday, Feb. 10 – DDI Training “LGBT SafeZone Ally Training”
- Event runs from 9 a.m. – noon in Room 242 of Doc Bryan
- Learn how to assist in creating safe spaces for students at Tech

Thursday, Feb. 11 – Movie Night
- Event begins at 9 p.m. in the Doc Bryan Lecture Hall
- Watch the movie “Selma” and enjoy refreshments

Thursday, Feb. 11 – Equality Ball
- Event begins at 8 p.m in the Young Ballroom
- Students are invited to “dress as you wish” to raise awareness for equality
- Cost is $2

Tuesday, Feb. 16 – Black History Month Keynote Address
- Event begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Doc Bryan Lecture Hall
- Listen to COL George T. Hudgens (Ret.) discuss his experiences as a Tech student in a tough historical time
- Sponsored by the Department of Diversity and Inclusion and the Arkansas Tech College of Arts and Humanities
Wednesday, Feb. 17 – Celebration of Black Culture
- Event begins at 7 p.m. at Doc’s Place
- Performances honoring the importance of black culture

Tuesday, Feb. 23 – Open Mic Night
- Event begins at 8 p.m. in the Young Ballroom
- Participate with spoken word, music or poetry

- Event begins at noon in Baz-Tech
- Open forum discussion on #blacklivesmatter and #alllivesmatter movements
Saturday, Feb. 27 – Arkansas Tech Basketball
- Games begin at 1 p.m. & 3 p.m. in Tucker Coliseum
- Enjoy basketball and a special student section to watch the games
Saturday, Feb. 27 – Line Dancing Lessons
