Arkansas Tech University criminal justice honor students have earned a national award for giving back to the community.
Alpha Phi Sigma, an honor society for criminal justice students, presented its service award to its ATU chapter in recognition of an initiative entitled “Caring During Crisis.” The program led to the collection and donation of items to individuals from vulnerable populations, including nursing home residents and food insecure children.
Participating ATU students also responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by providing gifts to local front line workers and helping the local juvenile probation office develop online educational modules for delinquent youth as a substitute for face-to-face training.
ATU Alpha Phi Sigma and its advisor, Dr. Jason Ulsperger, achieved all of this during the chapter’s first year of existence. Alpha Phi Sigma was named the 2020-21 new student organization of the year at Arkansas Tech by the ATU Division of Student Affairs.
