Dr. Jason Ulsperger, professor of sociology at Arkansas Tech University, is the 2024 recipient of the Stanford M. Lyman Distinguished Book Award.

The honor is in recognition of “The 53: Rituals, Grief and a Titan II Missile Disaster.” Ulsperger authored the book, which was published by Lexington Books in January of 2022. It is currently set to release in paperback in November 2024.

According to the publisher, the book looks at causes of a 1965 Titan II mishap in rural Arkansas that took the lives of 53 civilians. It also examines how the incident affected the daughters and sons of the deceased for nearly six decades.

The Stanford M. Lyman Distinguished Book Award was founded by the Mid-South Sociological Association to recognize original works that make a significant contribution to the field of sociology while including voices and perspectives that have been overlooked by previous scholars. The namesake was an American sociologist associated with the University of California at Berkeley and the New School for Social Research.
