Arkansas Tech University students earned all three Arkansas Association of Student Assistance Programs 2019 scholarships that were awarded during the AASAP TRIO Achievers Banquet in Little Rock on Sunday, Oct. 6.
Elmer Evangelista of Danville, Kaylee Freeman of Hector and Leo Perez of Van Buren swept the honors.
Evangelista received the Dr. Vance Simelton Scholarship. He is a senior majoring in rehabilitation science.
Freeman earned the Walter O. Mason Education Foundation Scholarship. She is a sophomore studying biology with biomedical option.
Perez collected the Robbie L. Lyle Scholarship. He is a freshman majoring in general studies.
ATU’s scholarship recipients were joined at the banquet by members of the Arkansas Tech Student Support Services and Arkansas Tech Upward Bound staffs.
Arkansas Tech hosts Student Support Services, Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math and Science and Veterans Upward Bound programs under the federally-funded TRIO umbrella. ATU’s TRIO programs are administered under the auspices of the ATU Division of Academic Affairs.
TRIO was created by the United States government in 1964 to overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education.
