Arkansas Tech University student Haven Brock organized a drive during the spring 2016 semester that yielded hundreds of dollars in crafting supplies for children served by Friendship Pediatric Services in Russellville.
During the Crafts for a Cause service project, Brock set up donation boxes on campus, at Friendship Community Care and at other locations. Upon the conclusion of the drive at the end of April, Brock (photographed, left) gathered the craft supplies and puzzles and delivered them to Melia Johnsgard (photographed, right), developmental specialist at Friendship Pediatric Services.
“She said that they were so grateful for the supplies, and she knows that the kids will enjoy them, too,” said Brock.
A native of Haskell, Brock won the titles of Miss Arkansas Tech University 2015 and Miss Greater Little Rock 2016. She will compete in the Miss Arkansas Scholarship Pageant for a second consecutive year this summer.
Her platform is Carson’s Kids: Embracing Autism.
“My reasoning behind donating the supplies to this organization is because of their service to children who have not only been diagnosed with autism, but their service to children with other developmental disabilities, as well,” said Brock. “I hope that this project will become an annual event, spreading to other communities in Arkansas, that will allow me to teach others about autism, its effects and the wonderful individuals who are impacted by it each day.”
