Davis, Silva Named All-Region

Arkansas Tech University student-athletes Johnie Davis and Rosie Silva have been selected to the 2012 Daktronics All-NCAA Division II South Central Region basketball teams.

Davis is a second team all-region pick in men’s basketball, while Silva was named second team all-region in women’s basketball.

A senior guard from Canton, Ohio, Davis leads the Wonder Boys and ranks second in the Great American Conference in scoring (20.3 points per game) this season.

He leads the GAC in steals (2.3 per game), ranksĀ tied for sixth in the league in 3-point field goals made (2.1 per game) and he is eighth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (.397).

Davis was named GAC player of the year, first team All-GAC and as a member of the All-GAC Tournament team. He has scored 1,093 points in two years at Arkansas Tech.

Silva is a junior guard from Caracas, Venezuela. She averaged 13.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 4.8 steals per game in her first season with the Golden Suns.

The 2011-12 GAC defender of the year and a first team All-GAC selection, Silva leads the conference in assists and steals this season. She established a new Arkansas Tech women’s basketball record for steals in a season with 126.

Silva currently ranks first in NCAA Division II women’s basketball in steals per game and third in the nation in assists per game.

The Golden Suns’ season ended with an 84-72 loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State in the first round of the 2012 GAC Tournament. Arkansas Tech was 22-4 this women’s basketball season. The Suns are ranked 16th in this week’s USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II top 25 poll.

The nationally 15th-ranked Wonder Boys will play in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division II Tournament South Central Regional at Wichita Falls, Texas, on Saturday, March 10.

Third-seeded Arkansas Tech (24-5) will face sixth-seeded West Texas A&M (19-8) for a noon game at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Radio station KWKK 100.9 FM will broadcast the game in the Arkansas River Valley. The broadcast will be streamed over the Internet at www.athletics.atu.edu.
