Sixteen Arkansas Tech students assisted Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center Thursday morning in a simulated disaster drill. The drill was designed to help the hospital practice its emergency procedures should a disaster occur in the River Valley area.
Nursing students at Arkansas Tech took part in the drill by serving as disaster victims. Each nursing student was given information regarding the symptoms they were experiencing, and hospital personnel worked to determine the best course of treatment to assist each hypothetical victim.
Additionally, Arkansas Tech journalism students served as members of the media. Students from Tech TV assisted by allowing the hospital to review its practices regarding media coverage and media interviews.
Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center officials say the hospital has a disaster plan in place and Thursday’s exercise was structured to help employees receive further training on their role in the event of a disaster.
