Arkansas Tech University became just the third NCAA Division II member to win 800 women’s basketball games on Saturday afternoon by defeating the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats 98-73 at Bearcat Arena in Maryville, Mo.
The Golden Suns join Delta State University (Miss.) and Bentley College (Mass.) as the only NCAA Division II women’s basketball programs with 800 or more all-time wins.
Tech used a 19-6 surge to open a 30-13 lead with 9:50 to go in the first half. The run was capped by a Laura Beth Anderson layup off an Ashley Chisum feed.
It was the 400th career assist for Chisum (photographed), who became just the fifth Golden Sun to reach 400 career assists.
Tech went on to lead 57-35 at halftime and by at least 18 points throughout the second half.
The Suns improved to 12-0 for just the third time in the 33-year history of Arkansas Tech women’s basketball.
Jenny Vining led five Golden Suns in double figures in scoring with 22 points. Natalia Santos and Jessica Weatherford added 16 points apiece, while Laura Beth Anderson had 14 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and seven steals.
Anna Baran contributed 10 points and nine rebounds as Tech improved to 2-0 all-time against the Bearcats.
Abby Henry led Northwest Missouri State (6-6) with 18 points.
The Golden Suns will complete a long two-game road trip on Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. contest against Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford, Okla.
