A third-quarter run initiated by one of Arkansas Tech University’s heralded freshmen unlocked the door to victory for the Golden Suns on Monday afternoon.

Kaley Shipman sparked the decisive 10-0 spurt that propelled ATU to a 65-45 non-conference win over Lane College (Tenn.) at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville.

Shipman made an assist and scored five points during the run, which provided the Golden Suns with a 51-26 lead at the 4:39 mark of the third quarter.

Arkansas Tech (2-0) led 57-30 after three periods and by at least 17 points the rest of the way as it improved to 9-0 all-time against the Dragons (0-1).

“I thought we played pretty good defense other than we fouled too much,” said ATU head coach Dave Wilbers. “Offensively, we made some careless mistakes. It looked a lot like the second game of the year at times. It was a half-court game, and I was pleased with our execution.”

Ke’Vonshaye Stackhouse paced the Golden Suns with 18 points. Jalei Oglesby had 13 points and nine rebounds, while Shipman finished with 12 points and Hannah Villines had 10 points.

Arkansas Tech out-rebounded Lane 57-32 and held a 16-6 edge over the Dragons in second-chance points. Tech’s Sarah Heard led all players with 12 rebounds.

Ra’keta Shelton scored a game-high 21 points for Lane.

The Golden Suns will host Angelo State University for a 2 p.m. non-conference contest at Tucker Coliseum on Sunday, Nov. 17.

Tickets will be available at the door. Radio station KCJC 102.3 FM and www.arkansastechsports.com will provide live coverage.
