Two-time defending Gulf South Conference West Division softball champion Arkansas Tech is picked to finish second in the GSC West in 2010 according to a preseason poll of league head coaches.
The Golden Suns received two first-place votes, two second-place votes, one third-place vote and a sixth-place vote in the balloting.
Arkansas Tech accumulated a total of 27 points in the voting. Arkansas-Monticello received five first-place votes and a total of 35 points to make it the preseason favorite to win the GSC West.
Alabama-Huntsville, the 2009 NCAA Division II national runner-up, is the favorite to win the GSC East Division and the GSC Tournament.
The Golden Suns, who were 42-21 overall and 19-9 in league play last season, return five starters in the field and two pitchers from their 2009 team.
Among those five returning starters in the field are three 2010 preseason All-GSC West Division selections: second baseman Shanda Jimeson, first baseman Tiphani Moon and catcher Roxie Palacios.
Head coach Gidget Pambianchi (photographed) is back for her fifth season as the Arkansas Tech head softball coach.
The Golden Suns will begin their 2010 season on Tuesday, Feb. 2, with a home doubleheader against Northeastern State University (Okla.). First pitch at the Chartwells Women’s Sports Complex is set for 1 p.m.
