Golden Suns Top Lady Muleriders 91-73

Nationally 22nd-ranked Arkansas Tech University extended its home winning streak to 13 consecutive women’s basketball games with a 91-73 Great American Conference win over Southern Arkansas University at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Suns (10-2 overall, 8-0 GAC) used an 11-0 run midway through the first quarter to claim an 18-8 lead. They held a 21-13 edge at the end of the first quarter and a 48-31 margin at halftime.

Arkansas Tech held the Lady Muleriders without a made field goal for the first 3:52 of the third quarter and maintained at least an 18-point lead throughout the second half.

Guards Anissa Pounds and Bre Brooks led the Golden Suns with 18 points apiece.

“It makes us balanced,” said Arkansas Tech head coach Dave Wilbers when asked about the scoring from his backcourt. “Our post players are going to give us production every night. Our guards did a good job in transition today. Our passing was sensational. When we score in transition and make 3-pointers, we are tough to beat.”

Fatima Adams added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Suns, who have won each of their last 11 home games against SAU.

It was the fourth consecutive win overall for Arkansas Tech. The Suns maintained sole possession of first place in the GAC standings.

Shana Holmes paced the Lady Muleriders with 14 points.

The Golden Suns will host Harding University for a 5:30 p.m. GAC contest at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Monday, Jan. 18.

Tickets ($5 adults, $3 students and senior citizens) will be available at the door. Those with a valid Arkansas Tech identification card will be admitted free of charge. Radio station KCJC 102.3 FM and www.arkansastechsports.com will have live coverage.
