Katie Horsman scored a career-high 27 points to lead the nationally 14th-ranked Arkansas Tech Golden Suns to a 79-64 win over the Henderson State Lady Reddies at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Saturday evening.
Horsman made six 3-pointers as the Golden Suns (19-3 overall, 10-3 Great American Conference) assumed sole possession of first place in the GAC standings with three regular season games remaining.
Arkansas Tech’s win, combined with Harding’s 87-68 loss at Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday, puts the Golden Suns one game in front of the GAC pack entering the final seven days of the regular season.
“Henderson State was really packed in the lane defensively tonight,” said Golden Suns head coach Dave Wilbers. “We talked about getting the basketball into the interior of their zone, whether that was through the high post or in the short corner. We did that, which forced Henderson State to sink in defensively. That left Katie with wide open shots, and we were able to take what they were giving us.”
Arkansas Tech led 37-29 at halftime and by as many as 12 points early in the second half, but eight straight points from Henderson State cut the Suns’ edge to 42-38 with 17:15 left.
Following a Golden Suns’ timeout, Arkansas Tech reeled off a 16-6 run over a span of 3:49. Rosie Silva had six points during the spurt, including a bucket at the 12:12 mark that gave the Suns a 58-44 lead.
Tech maintained at least a nine-point advantage the rest of the way as it earned an eighth consecutive women’s basketball win and beat the Lady Reddies for a 12th consecutive meeting.
Silva finished with 15 points and 11 assists. Jessica Weatherford had a double-double of her own with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Henderson State (12-11, 5-8) got a team-high 13 points from Sheay Longstaff.
The Golden Suns will visit Harding University for a 5:30 p.m. GAC game at Rhodes Field House in Searcy on Monday, Feb. 20.
