Arkansas Tech University student-athletes will benefit from a new scholarship opportunity established by a Wonder Boy letterman and his wife.
The Charles L. and Donna J. Horne, Jr. Endowed Scholarship will provide financial aid for selected ATU student-athletes who have maintained a grade point average of 2.5 or higher while pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in education or business.
Charles earned his bachelor’s degree from Arkansas Tech in 1956. Donna completed an associate degree at Arkansas Tech in 1956 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education with honors in 1968 and a master’s degree in 1979.
“My parents have always contributed back to the communities in which they have lived,” said John Horne, son of Charles L. Horne, Jr. and Donna J. Horne. “They feel like that is important, and they have often done so anonymously. In this case, they wanted to support ATU in the area of intercollegiate athletics.”
Charles Horne, Jr. earned three letters playing football at Arkansas Tech from 1953-55. He was a member of the Wonder Boys’ 1954 Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference championship team. Horne was president of the Arkansas Tech Business Administration Club and a member of the T Club and student council during his time as an undergraduate student.
“My father grew up outside Rison, served in the Korean War and then played football at Arkansas Tech,” said John Horne. “Through that, he was able to move forward in his education and eventually attained multiple degrees. It allowed him to have a successful career in the education field. My parents want to support young people who seek to utilize sports to further their education. They believe that athletics is an outstanding avenue to pursue success in life.”
