The American Society of Interior Designers South Central Chapter has presented Arkansas Tech University and WER Architects with a 2021 silver award in the excellence in design category.
The honor is in recognition of the Hull Building Student Union, which opened in November 2020.
Sande Mabry, construction coordinator at ATU, accepted the award on behalf of Arkansas Tech.
“Sande worked very closely with the architect and our internal customers,” said Brian Lasey, director of the ATU Office of Facilities Management. “She had a high level of involvement in the selection of finishes, colors and other factors that contributed to this award.”
The ATU Board of Trustees reviewed and approved plans during its October 2019 meeting to renovate the former swimming pool area in the Hull Building for the purposes of converting it into a student union space.
Trustees subsequently selected Little Rock-based firm WER Architects to plan the renovation and awarded a construction contract to Cline Construction Group of Little Rock. Work on remodeling the 17,000 square feet of interior space included in the project commenced in January 2020.
The Hull Building Student Union provides ATU students with access to social activities such as table tennis, billiards, the latest Xbox and PlayStation video game systems, soft seating designed to encourage interaction and space for musical performances and presentations. Chartwells, food service provider at Arkansas Tech, operates a concession area inside the Hull Building Student Union.
The south side of the student union provides a view of Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field, home of Arkansas Tech football.
