Dr. Jackie Paxton, professor of curriculum and instruction at Arkansas Tech University, died on Thursday, July 11. He was 73.

Paxton was recognized by the ATU Division of Academic Affairs for 30 years of service to Arkansas Tech during a ceremony in May.

Much of Paxton’s teaching, scholarship and service focused on special education. He frequently collaborated with his ATU faculty colleague, Dr. Timothy Leggett, and others on projects that benefited the education of children in need. Those projects aided children ranging from local residents in the Arkansas River Valley to as far away as the Ray of Hope Academy, which is operated in Douala, Cameroon, by former Arkansas Tech student Ernest Ehabe.

Paxton graduated from the University of Central Arkansas with Bachelor of Science in Education and Master of Science in Education degrees. He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree in special education from the University of Arkansas.
