Arkansas Tech University will conduct its 2023-24 Freshman Leadership Experience Wednesday, Sept. 13, through Friday, Sept. 15.
The three-day retreat seeks to provide incoming ATU students with the tools necessary to be a leader on campus and beyond.
“I learned that it is okay to make mistakes as a leader and that it is okay to ask for help from your peers,” said ATU student Hannah Melton of Clarksville, who participated in ATU Freshman Leadership Experience during the 2022-23 academic year. “I also learned that it is important to use people for their strengths and to constantly motivate them. With this information I learned, I plan to use this to help me be a better leader while on campus.”
According to the ATU Department of Campus Life, learning outcomes for ATU Freshman Leadership Experience include:
- Students will be able to identify their personal strengths and how they function in a team;
- Students will learn about the different types of communication styles;
- Students will learn skills to engage in conflict effectively and work toward conflict resolution;
- Students will learn that leadership is more than holding a position;
- Students will practice team leadership through active group participation.
“I really enjoyed how organized, yet casual, this experience was,” said Ellie Stokes of Dardanelle, a 2022-23 ATU Freshman Leadership Experience participant. “It was a perfect mix of learning and fun. I felt so comfortable and wish I could come every year.”
Applications for the 2023-24 ATU Freshman Leadership Experience must be submitted by Friday, Aug. 18.
