The Miller Center for Global Engagement at Arkansas Tech University will host a program entitled “The History of Geisha in Japanese Culture” from 1-3 p.m. Friday, April 11, in Dean Hall room 117.

Masae Satouchi will be the featured speaker. She grew up surrounded by traditional Japanese culture as a result of being raised by kimono merchants in Kyoto.

Satouchi won a national hairstyling competition in Japan and graduated from Kyoto Beauty School, at which point she moved to New York City. Her experiences there included work as a Japanese fire dancer and founding the New York Kimono Academy, which promotes a fusion of traditional and modern Japanese fashion.

Her talent for combining movement, color and storytelling has been featured on MTV, at the Burning Man festival and in off-Broadway performances.

The event on April 11 will include a kimono wearing experience for those in attendance.
