Hundreds of members of the Arkansas Tech University community participated in the first March to Main on Saturday, Aug. 25, as a demonstration of the mutually beneficial relationship between ATU and the City of Russellville.
The march was led by Randy Horton, Russellville mayor; Dr. Robin E. Bowen, ATU president; the ATU marching band, Arkansas’ Band of Distinction; members of the ATU spirit squads, including the Tech cheerleading squad and the Golden Girls dance team; and Jerry the Bulldog, ATU campus ambassador.
Once the march arrived at Depot Park in Russellville Downtown, participants enjoyed a chicken cookout made possible by Tyson Foods and became part of the audience for the Music Downtown at Sundown event featuring Jamie Lou and the Hullabalo and Morgan Road.
“Once our group of marchers and the members of the Russellville community find their seats to enjoy the music, it will become impossible to distinguish one from the other,” said Bowen before the group departed from campus to begin their march. “We will be one community, inextricably tied together. That is representative of a flourishing community, and it is the perfect metaphor for the relationship between Arkansas Tech University and the City of Russellville…for the truth is, we are one people, working together to make this a better place to live.”
