Dr. Hanna Norton, associate professor of journalism, will become the interim head of the Arkansas Tech University Department of Speech, Theatre and Journalism as of July 1 following action by the Tech Board of Trustees on Thursday. Norton (photographed) holds three degrees from the University of Georgia. She earned her Ph.D. in 2001 and joined the Arkansas Tech faculty as an assistant professor later that year.
The student body selected Norton as Arkansas Tech professor of the year in 2006-07. She was promoted to associate professor that spring. Norton served as president of the faculty senate in 2008-09. At spring commencement in 2009, she was presented with a Faculty Award of Excellence in the teaching category. Norton has also been active in academic advising during her time at Arkansas Tech.
She was honored for her work in that field with an Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit in the academic advising faculty category at the 2008 National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Conference in Chicago, Ill.
Dr. Donna Vocate, who has served as the department head since 1998, will remain on the Arkansas Tech faculty and continue her duties as professor of speech.
