Arkansas Tech swept a season-opening softball doubleheader from the Northeastern State RiverHawks at the Chartwells Women’s Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
The Golden Suns (2-0) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Northeastern State RiverHawks 2-1 in game one.
Tech trailed 1-0 going to the bottom half of the final inning, but Tiphani Moon (photographed) quickly changed that.
She led off the last of the seventh with a home run to right-center field that tied the score at 1-1.
Roxie Palacios followed with a single to left, and from that point forward, the RiverHawks came unhinged.
Palacios’ single was booted, allowing her to advance to second base. She was replaced by pinch runner Lauren Jones, who came home with the winning run on a Northeastern State throwing error.
Sarah Taylor (1-0) pitched three innings of scoreless relief for Tech and was credited with the win.
Game two was not nearly as dramatic as the Golden Suns rapped out 10 base hits in a 9-2 victory.
Tech’s Amy Kilpatrick was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three runs batted in during the nightcap. Moon added three RBIs and Dana Stephenson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Starting pitcher Chelsea Evanoff (1-0) scattered seven hits over six innings to earn the victory in the circle.
The Golden Suns will host the third annual Tech Spring Slam Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Tech will open its portion of the event by taking on Central Missouri at 11 a.m. Saturday.
