Anthony Gower went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three runs batted in as Arkansas Tech defeated Ouachita Baptist 7-4 on Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep at Tech Field in Russellville.
The Wonder Boys (29-14 overall, 10-4 GSC) went in front for good at 6-4 on back-to-back solo home runs by Gower and Chris Reese in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Gower’s second blast of the day — another solo shot — came in the sixth inning and set the eventual final score.
Chad Wynn pitched three and one-third innings of scoreless relief to make Tech’s 7-4 lead stand up. Wynn allowed just two hits and earned his second save of the season.
Blaine Sims (4-3) started on the mound for the Wonder Boys. He went five and two-thirds innings, allowed four runs on five hits and struck out six to get the win.
The win gave Tech its first three-game sweep of Ouachita Baptist (21-19, 6-8) in six years. The Wonder Boys remain in sole possession of third place in the GSC West Division, just one game behind second-place Delta State (29-10-1, 11-3).
Tech head coach Dave Dawson (photographed) has now tied the school record for most baseball wins by a head coach in his first season with the Wonder Boys. Dale Harpenau set that school record with 29 wins in his first season at Arkansas Tech in 1988.
The Wonder Boys will host Lyon College for a non-conference game at Tech Field at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Tech will be trying for its first 30-win season since 2004 and just its eighth 30-win baseball season ever.
Arkansas Tech will return to league play on Saturday, April 17, and Sunday, April 18, with a three-game series at Delta State.
