Arkansas Tech University hosted a reading of the U.S. Constitution during Party at the Plaza on Saturday, Sept. 16, as part of its 2017 observance of Constitution Day.
Organized by the ATU Department of History and Political Science, other 2017 Constitution Day activities at Arkansas Tech included visits to area schools and informational tables on the Russellville campus during the day on Friday, Sept. 15.
Approximately 30 volunteers from ATU shared the story of the U.S. Constitution with more than 700 students in the Russellville School District during visits to Dwight Elementary School, Sequoyah Elementary School and Russellville Junior High School.
The U.S. Constitution was adopted by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pa., on Sept. 17, 1787.
In 2004, Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia championed a new law that designated Sept. 17 of each year as Constitution Day. Public schools and institutions of higher learning across the United States are required to provide educational programs about the document on Constitution Day.
