Arkansas Tech graduate students Hope Russell and Guy Joubert met in the summer of 2014 as part of their work as graduate assistants.
“Guy and I were asked to create hazing prevention education materials for the university (romantic, I know),” said Russell. “We worked on the project for a couple months, during which my fellow graduate assistants claimed we were perfect for each other and worked so well together. Our respective supervisors even thought we made quite the pair, but we laughed it off.”
After finishing the project, the two were still finding excuses to see one another.
“Apparently I missed a big hint one night when he offered to run an errand for me, and I declined,” said Russell. “Thankfully, a few weeks later our mutual friends went out, and he asked me out on our first date.”
The two continued dating and both graduated from Arkansas Tech. They have taken positions in different cities, and December 2012 was the last time they lived in the same town.
“On December 28, 2015, we were engaged in my hometown of Birmingham at a favorite local spot of my family’s,” said Russell. “It was sweet, personal and turned into an impromptu engagement party with friends and family.”
The two will wed in March of 2017, and they hope many friends that share their Tech connection will be able to attend.
