Tech Scores Early and Often to Beat U of O

Arkansas Tech pounded out 21 base hits and ended a three-game losing string by defeating the University of the Ozarks Eagles 19-6 at Tech Field in Russellville on Tuesday night.

The Wonder Boys (26-14) sent 13 men to the plate and scored 10 times in the bottom of the first inning to take a 10-0 lead.

This one was never in doubt from there as six Arkansas Tech pitchers conspired to keep the Eagles (10-18) at bay.

Cody Hatman (2-2) was tabbed as the winning pitcher after he worked one and one-third scoreless innings.

Matt Johnson led the Wonder Boys’ offensive outburst by going 4-for-5 with a double, a triple, two runs batted in and three runs scored.

Josh Riley hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third that increased Tech’s lead to 16-1.

Anthony Gower also homered for the Wonder Boys. He drove in two runs, as did Nick Makris, Chris Reese and Madison Beaird.

Landon Sullins got three hits and scored three runs.

Chad Wynn, Tyler Taunton and Joe Walton notched two hits apiece for Arkansas Tech.

The Wonder Boys will return to Gulf South Conference action Saturday and Sunday when they host Ouachita Baptist for a three-game series at Tech Field.

Tech is currently in third place in the GSC West Division, while Ouachita Baptist is one game behind the Wonder Boys and in fourth place.

First pitch for Saturday’s doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. The two sides will play a single game beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday. Admission will be free.

Radio station KCAB 980 AM and www.athletics.atu.edu will have live play-by-play coverage.
